Men’s basketball has been played at the Summer Olympic Games consistently since the 1936 Games in Berlin, and since then the United States have only ever not won the competition four times. This game photographed here shows the United States starting off their Olympic campaign with a comfortable victory over the hosts China 101-70.
And now some interesting “Pub-Quiz” facts:
Despite being somewhat a bit of an Americanism, basketball was actually invented by a Canadian called James Naiswith in 1891. Moreover, after the Soviet Union contentiously beat the United States the 1972 Summer Olympics the Americans refused to accept their silver-medals, which the International Olympic Committee still have to this day.
