Almudena Cathedral

Almudena Cathedral
aka
Santa María la Real de La Almudena

Plans were drawn up in the 16th century for the design of the cathedral, which were then shelved until construction started in 1879, but progress was slow and then the Spanish Civil War broke out, creating another further delay.

Finally full building works got underway and the Cathedral was officially opened and consecrated by the Pope in May 2004
