Pablo Picasso
Maria Picasso y Lopez, 1923
Oil on canvas, 72 x 60cm
Private Collection.
During 1923, possibly because of the recent birth of his first son, Paulo, Picasso returned to many of the subjects which he had used during his rose period, including harlequins, infants and everyday people. Picasso was very fond of his mother and chose to go by her maiden name instead of his father’s. He had been baptized as Pablo Diego Jose Francisco de Paula Juan Nepomuceno Maria de los Remedios Cipriana de la Santisima Trinidad Clito Ruiz y Picasso.
