Pablo Picasso. Portrait of Françoise. 1946.

Pablo Picasso
Portrait of Françoise, 1946
Pencil and charcoal on paper, 66 x 50 cm
Musee Picasso, Paris

In 1943, Picasso (aged 62) met a young art student Françoise Gilot (born 1921) at a restaurant in Paris. Their relationship lasted ten years and produced two children, Claud and Paloma. However, annoyed with Picasso’s ongoing relationships with other woman and his violent character, she left him in 1953. Interestingly, she is the only woman to leave the artist. In 1970 she married the developer of the Polio vaccine, Dr. Jonas Salk.
