The National Shrine of St Francis of Assisi. St Francis of Assisi church Historic Landmark in San Francisco's Italian American neighborhood, North Beach. An old Italian man sipping coffee at the Cafe Trieste, across the street told us that baseball icon Joe Di Maggio was an alter boy at this church as a boy and honed his baseball skills on the nearby playgrounds.
