The government authorities in Jakarta faced with the problem that many underprivileged people had been married in religious ceremonies, but thereafter did not have the money needed to pay for the legal marriage certificate. But the government stepped in to help and arranged for a mass marriage ceremony which was held Senayan Stadium, South Jakarta, on Tuesday.
The venue was packed as 4,501 couples were joined together in legalized wedding, which was a fantastic gesture financed by the Jakarta municipal government, the Pondok Kasih Foundation and television station B Channel. Many of the couples are homeless living under highway flyovers , dump sites and several other poverty stricken slum areas. But now is a time for a brief respite from poverty and celebration is the order of the day.
Here are some comments from officials – quote –"It touches my heart because there are people who still care for them (the couples) because they are the people who live in slum areas such as under the flyovers, dump-sites and others."
Plus quips from some of the happy couples – quote - “We thank God for having answered our prayers. We finally got our marriage certificate,” said 86-year-old groom Rahman, from Tanjung Priok, North Jakarta.
The youngest couple were sixteen year olds and the oldest 86.
