Pablo Ruiz Picasso
“Nude”, 1907
oil on canvas, 61 x 46 cm
The State Hermitage,
St. Petersburg
Picasso began to break away from his more realistic style of painting as early as 1906. Completed in the spring of 1907, the irregular forms and the mask-like face in “Nude” is an early indication of Picasso’s debt to African sculpture.
