Yala, Thailand, February 25 2008. Thai army troops on patrol in the war weary southern province of Yala, scene of an ongoing deadly Islamic insurgency. The region is predominantly Muslim. Over 2900 people have died in the three southern provinces, Pattani, Narathiwat, and Yala since the violence flared in 2004. Drive-by shootings and bombings occur almost daily. Most of the victims of these cowardly acts are ordinary Muslim and Buddhists trying to go about their daily lives. 40000 troops patrol the poverty ridden region yet the daily terrorism continues. A political solution must be found to this century old struggle. Violence only leads to more violence. Meanwhile the hard daily life of ordinary people struggling to survive goes on in Yala. This live report was filed by University student Tak a life long resident of Yala
