Pablo Picasso
Portrait of Daniel-Henry Kahnweiler, 1910
Oil on canvas, 100 x 72 cm
The Art Institute of Chicago

This portrait of Picasso’s friend, advisor, and dealer is a striking example of how he applied his Analytical Cubism method to the characterization of an individual human being. Cubism challenged the tradition of considering painting as an orderly spatial unity that mirrors reality.

In short, instead of seeing painted equivalents of recognizable things, the viewer was presented with objects represented simultaneously from several points of view.
